Taken from one of my favorite scenes in Game of Thrones is the quote above – “Chaos isn’t a pit, chaos is a ladder!” It comes up in a conversation between two secretive and scheming lords who are hell bent on destroying each other’s most recent plots.
It is also said in response to the question – what will we do when the world cracks and crumbles into chaos around us? One lord fears that day while the other cannot withhold his excitement at the possibilities that will become exposed. He has been planning for this day and is ready with a full arsenal of tools to make full use of the coming opportunities.
The stakes in our everyday lives are different than those in the Game of Thrones world but the truth about chaos remains the same and those who are best prepared for the worst will find the rungs on the ladder most accessible.
Chaos is a great equalizer. In the midst of a crisis there is no time to worry about hierarchies or rank and the man with the answers is the most powerful person in the room. Yesterday when everything was going according to plan it was hard to stand out and command attention but today, when the pit engulfs those ill-prepared, it can be you climbing above the rest.
We have all been in the “war room” at one point or another. The meeting with way too many managers and much too little direction. Everyone is scrambling in every direction compiling an action item list a mile long but not even getting a foot closer to the answer. This is the chaos we have become most accustomed to.
It is here with the most potential for ascension. It is here where your collected, cool, and rational thought process can tear the problem to little pieces. In this room, facing this problem, you are the most influential person if only for a short while. You are asked to showcase your best and the room will take notice who delivers.
One great family in the Game of Thrones arena has a saying – “Winter is Coming”. It means stay vigilant and be prepared for the worst. Chaos will come and how prepared you are will determine whether its you in the pit… or climbing the ladder!
